Thanksgiving Dishes with a Nutritional Twist

With the holiday season quickly approaching it’s easy find ourselves indulging in lots of delicious and soul-warming comfort food. Everyone is in food comas for days on end, and honestly isn’t that what the holidays are about? Relaxing, spending time with loved ones, and eating your own body weight in delicious food… yes, that sounds about right.

Now, I am a firm believer in holiday (eating) traditions and being an Englishman who spent half of my life growing up in Ireland I am no stranger to said traditions. Whether it is pigging out on Christmas (with so much turkey and cranberry sauce I start clucking), or just spending a Sunday at grandmas house, all will undoubtedly end with a stomach crammed full of amazing food! Do I think we should ever lose these important traditions? NO! Do I still get excited by all food oriented events and occasions? YES! Will I be eating so much food this Thanksgiving I’m going to sleep for a whole day? PROBABLY! So here’s the important question: Can we keep these traditions and eat amazing dishes while making them nutritionally better for us without sacrificing traditional flavor? OF COURSE!

Sauteed Brussel Sprouts with a Warm Kale and Hazelnut Salad

Mainly due to culinary childhood nightmares Brussel Sprouts where not at the top of my “must-eat” list when it came to this time of the year. Fast forward to now, and I can’t get enough of them! Give them a gentle sauté, and pair with a warm kale and hazelnut salad with a Baobab dressing… I can’t get enough!

MESQUITE SPICED BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP

The same goes for Butternut squash, which are in season this time of year, (I suggest taking advantage of their availability). They have great versatility and an amazing flavor. Have you tried Butternut Squash fritters? Simple, delicious, and they make an amazing appetizer or side dish for your Thanksgiving dinner. Don’t worry about having extra squash trimmings- you can always turn them into a delicious soup!

I’m sure you get the picture, now onto the serious stuff – DESSERT! We always crave it, we always eat it, and most of us normally feel guilty about it… but don’t worry! This year we have the perfect dessert to satisfy your cravings and make that guilty feeling a thing of the past.
