Digestive enzymes reduce quality differences between plant and animal proteins

Vegetarians have faced a dilemma for ages — how to get a complete, plant based protein that is equivalent in value to that of an animal protein. In an effort to solve this dilemma and offer vegetarians an optimal protein that is plant based, MRM teamed up with the University of Tampa and scientist Jacob Wilson, a distinguished researcher in the sports medicine field, to conduct a research study.

The results of the study, which took more than a year to complete, will make vegetarians everywhere rejoice. Instead of just relaying the good news, let’s start at the beginning and talk about why plant proteins have been considered inferior to animal proteins and what can be done to make them more equivalent.

Plant based proteins are usually rich in complex carbohydrates, which decreases the absorption of proteins. So, compared to a whey protein, often considered the “king” of all proteins due to it’s biological value, and plant based proteins just don’t match up. Additionally, individual Amino Acid amounts in plant protein is “incomplete” compared to human and animal proteins. This is why we must “combine” various plant proteins to meet or get close to the amino acid ratio of animal proteins.

Knowing that the research team at MRM hand selected precise amounts of pea and brown rice protein concentrate and added a digestive enzyme blend to help break down the complex carbohydrates.
